José Carlos Carvalho
Photography Trainer
Born in Luanda, 1970.
With the photography course at Ar.Co, in 1991 he began his career in the regional press, at Jornal Correio da Linha where he remained until 1993 when he was invited to join Correio da Manhã. In 1998 he moved as a Photographic Reporter to Diário de Notícias where he worked as a photography editor in 2005/2006. He has been at Visão magazine since 2007, where he worked exclusively until April 2014. On this date, Impresa’s photography center was created, where he worked for Expresso, Visão and other publications regularly. In 2018, he transitioned to the TIN – Trust in News group,which holds several publications, including Visão, Exame, Jornal de Letras, Courier Internacional, etc. At the same time, he remained active in the Journalism community, participating in various projects, books, exhibitions and competitions.
Professionally, in addition to his experience as a Photographic Reporter in various publications, since 1991 he has worked as a Trainer in the photojournalism discipline at IPF – Portuguese Institute of Photography since 2006 and between 2009 and 2016 he was a Trainer at the Polytechnic Institute of Tomar, and at ETIC Algarve since 2023. At the same time, he has already completed several training courses at MEF – Photographic Expression Movement.
Winner of several photography awards, including: 2nd Place in the Fuji-Film Reporting Category, Press Photography 1998; Vision, photojournalism 2005 in the Daily Life category; Estação Imagem 2011 in the Daily Life category; In 2011 and 2014, he won the Journalism Award “Human Rights & Integration” in the Press category; he won 2nd and 3rd place in the REFLEX-CAIS-BES award; the Gazeta Fotografia Award 2013; shortlisted by the 10 finalists for the Gabriel García Márquez Journalism Award in the Image category in 2015: Estação Imagem in the News category and Honorable Mention in the Contemporary Affairs category 2016; 1st place “Looks of Mercy” from SCML 2016; 1st place in the “Outros Olhares Covid-19” competition of the Order of Doctors in 2021. He was also the Winner of the Gazeta Imprensa award in 2024.

Author of the photographic project 12.12.12 which resulted in a book and travelling exhibition during 2013. He was part of the group of photographers of “ProjectoTroika” that resulted in a book published in December 2014.
Author of the book “No matter how dark the night… TOMORROW IS ANOTHER DAY” from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation 2017, in 2020 he participated in the photography book EverydayCovid. And in 2021 he was one of the authors of the book Women in Science published by Ciência Viva.
